A common technique is to find a job centered upon your skill set. You are asked to inventory your skills, and then someone helps you identify a job using those skills. At first glimpse, this technique seems logical.

The problem with the skills-based approach is this simple fact… just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean you like doing it. What you like doing is being you, acting on your Given Talent. That's why instead, we focus our time and attention on you being you and how that creates value in yourself and others.

The common name of this approach is the Plan and Implement Strategy. We think “Look then Leap” describes it better. With this common approach, you are inundated with a bunch of canned skills, personality, and aptitude tests. Ironically, most of these tests can be found online for free. Your scores for the tests are input into a magic black box, and a printout is sent to you with your suggested careers. Then the pressure is on. You are encouraged to change…and change now!!

Your counselor prods you to muster up courage and jump from your old career into the new one. The clock is ticking. Like Peter Pan flying through the air, you are cheered as you leap into Neverland in the hopes that you (gulp) live happily ever after.

We realize this approach only works in Neverland, and because of that we never ever start a ticking time clock on your decisions.  We never limit your options based upon what comes to the top of the magic black ball when you shake it.  We know each and every person has their own timeframe.  More importantly, we know each and every person has their own way of processing information through their Given Talent.  No computer in the world can match that knowledge. 

No, that’s not the real name. We’re just using that name to give you a mental picture of how it works. This approach starts with you recollecting your “passions” through a series of checklists. Once you have listed your passions, you participate in a gut-wrenching session (either online or in person) where you relive the passion you felt doing those activities. The “Kumbaya group” is then supposed to collectively brainstorm a way for you to make money using your passion.

This strategy seems liberating, but actually it’s very limiting. For example, let’s say you identify golf, traveling, and knitting as your passions. There are only so many jobs available in the golf, travel and knitting industries. Talking about your passions seems very freeing, but really it severely restricts your opportunities. Besides, now that you've been through The Clarifier you know the truth.

It’s not the activity itself that is energizing to you.  You’re energized because you’re using your Given Talent.  This realization broadens you way beyond the Kumbaya approach. 

We don’t spend time analyzing your skill set. We don’t believe your career is an either/or proposition with a ticking time clock attached. Nor do we subject you to Kumbaya sessions.

Your elevator pitch is composed of three parts; a quick succinct description of your Given Talent, how you’ve used your Given Talent in the past and how you plan to use it in the future. 

This pitch is based around techniques that are very easy to master. (The elevator pitch is so important that both our coaching packages include coaching to complete it.)

Don’t worry. You don’t have to be a speech major to master the elevator pitch. It’s made around you, your style and your Given Talent. It will roll off your tongue in no time because after all, it is you.  This crucial part of the program will pay dividends for years to come. Once you have your elevator pitch down, then it will be time to hit the road. Each person’s roadmap is different because everyone has a unique Given Talent, value set and desires. Our job is to align all of those in your life and lifework.  Each person has their own game plan. Some might reengineer their current employment, others might decide it’s time to change careers or jobs.
